Compensation for badly packed pottery

I have just received two pottery plates that are both broken due to poor packaging that did not comply with the Post Office guidelines i.e.pack with a minimum of 50 mm of cushion material around each article. No insurance was offered at time of purchase, should I receive compensation from the seller?
