Who is liable when an item is lost in the post?

Hi,I recently sold an item and sent it out to the buyer promptly. Seven days later it still hasn't arrived. I hope it will arrive soon and will leave it at least another week before acting but I stipulated on my listing that it would be sent 'via Royal Mail 1st Class Standard'. I offered insurance as optional but the buyer didn't take it. I took out insurance anyway as the item was worth
